What Is DMS Survival Mode?

Survival Mode is a dynamic DMS language game designed to help you practise, review, and test your German vocabulary.

Before starting the game, you can choose:

• your language level;
• a word category;
• the prompt language;
• the answer language.

During the game, you see a word and have to find the correct translation while the timer continuously counts down.

The game ends when you lose all three lives or run out of time.

Choose Which German Words You Want to Practise

You do not always need to review your entire vocabulary at once.

In Survival Mode, you can choose a specific word category:

• nouns;
• verbs;
• adjectives;
• mixed vocabulary.

If you want to focus specifically on German verbs, for example, you can practise only those.

Mixed vocabulary makes the game more unpredictable because the next word may come from a completely different category.

Adapt the Game to Your German Level

The game can be adjusted to match your current language level.

This allows you to begin with simpler German vocabulary and gradually move on to more challenging words.

For a beginner, the main challenge may simply be recognising and understanding a German word correctly.

For a more advanced player, the goal may be different — reacting faster, building longer streaks of correct answers, and reaching a higher rank.

This means the same game mechanics can be used at different stages of learning German.

Four Languages and Different Translation Directions

One of the features of Survival Mode is the ability to combine different languages.

Four languages are available:

• 🇩🇪 German;
• 🇱🇻 Latvian;
• 🇬🇧 English;
• 🇷🇺 Russian.

You can choose the prompt language and answer language separately.

For example:

You see a German word and have to find the correct English translation.

Or the other way around:

You see an English word and have to find the corresponding German word.

You can use Latvian and Russian in the same way.

Changing the translation direction allows you to practise the same vocabulary in different ways. Recognising the meaning of a German word and finding the correct German word starting from your own language are not the same task.

3 Lives and 60 Seconds

Every Survival Mode game starts with:

The timer continuously counts down.

However, every correct answer adds another 5 seconds.

This means the game is not limited to the initial 60 seconds. As long as you keep answering correctly, you can earn more time and continue playing.

Every wrong answer, on the other hand, costs you one life.

The basic gameplay loop is simple:

The more correct answers you give, the longer you can keep going.

Build Streaks of Correct Answers

An important part of Survival Mode is your streak.

During the game, you can see:

• your current correct-answer streak;
• your best streak in the current game.

This adds another challenge.

Your goal is no longer simply to answer as many questions correctly as possible. You can also try to build increasingly longer streaks without making a mistake.

Your streak may also give you an additional Points bonus at the end of the game.

Track Your Performance While You Play

You do not have to wait until the game ends to see how well you are doing.

During the game, the screen shows:

• time remaining;
• number of lives;
• number of correctly answered words;
• current streak;
• best streak;
• current rank;
• rank progress.

You can also see the selected translation direction, such as DE → EN, as well as the word for which you need to find the correct answer.

This means you can always see how much time you have left, how many lives remain, how long your current streak is, and how far you have progressed through the ranking system.

From D to S+ — How Does the Ranking System Work?

Survival Mode has its own ranking system.

During the game, you can progress through the following ranks:

The screen shows your current rank and your progress towards the next one.

When you reach a new rank, DMS lets you know.

At that point, you can make a choice: finish your current attempt with the result you have already achieved or continue playing and try to climb even higher.

This adds a tactical decision to the game:

Your final rank can also affect the number of Points you receive at the end of the game.

Earn DMS Points for Your Performance

You can also earn DMS Points in Survival Mode.

After the game, you receive a detailed breakdown showing how your Points were earned.

Your result can include:

• word Points — for correct answers;
• streak bonus — for a successful streak of correct answers;
• rank bonus — for the rank you reached.

This means several factors contribute to your final score.

It is not only important to answer correctly. You can also try to maintain your streak and reach a higher rank.

After each game, you can see both your total number of Points and exactly how they were earned.

DMS Points Work Across the Entire Platform

The Points you earn in Survival Mode are not a separate in-game currency.

They are part of the overall DMS Points system.

You can use your Points in the DMS Points Shop, where they can be exchanged for various learning tools, game tools, and boosters.

The Points Shop includes, for example:

• balloon refills;
• learning tools;
• Points boosters;
• grammar helpers;
• Word Search tools;
• Survival Mode boosters;
• other DMS inventory items.

Use Your Points for Survival Mode Boosters

Some of your DMS Points can be used directly in Survival Mode.

There are currently three time boosters available.

Extra Seconds — 250 Points

Adds 30 seconds to your timer.

This can be especially useful when you have built a strong streak or are close to reaching the next rank but are running out of time.

Slower Timer — 450 Points

Temporarily slows down the timer.

This gives you more time to think about your answers and continue playing.

Time Freeze — 900 Points

Temporarily stops the timer.

This is the most valuable of the currently available Survival Mode time boosters.

The booster system allows you to use previously earned DMS Points strategically to try to achieve a better result.

After the game, your results show whether boosters were used during that particular attempt. Your profile also keeps track of the total number of boosters you have used.

What Happens When You Make a Mistake?

A mistake in Survival Mode does not immediately end the game.

You have three lives.

Every wrong answer costs you one of them.

But DMS does not simply forget the words you answered incorrectly.

After the game, incorrectly answered words are collected in the “Words to Review” section.

There you can see:

• the word shown in the question;
• your answer;
• the correct answer;
• the word category;
• the language level;
• the translation direction used;
• the word in German, Latvian, English, and Russian.

A mistake is therefore more than just a lost life. It becomes a clear indication of which word you should review.

If you complete the game without making any mistakes, there will be nothing to review in the “Words to Review” section.

Get a Detailed Result After Every Game

When you run out of time or lose all your lives, the game shows your results.

You can see:

• the rank you reached;
• the number of correct words;
• the number of incorrect answers;
• your best streak;
• your total Points earned;
• word Points;
• streak bonus;
• rank bonus;
• boosters used;
• whether a continuation was used.

Your result is therefore more than just a single number.

Track Your Survival Mode Progress

If you are signed in to your DMS account, a game does not end with the results screen.

Your DMS profile keeps track of your long-term Survival Mode statistics.

You can follow:

• your highest rank achieved;
• your highest number of correct answers;
• your longest correct-answer streak;
• your total number of runs;
• your total Points earned;
• continuations used;
• boosters used.

Your previous game history is also available.

For each run, you can see:

• the date;
• the rank achieved;
• the number of correct answers;
• the number of incorrect answers;
• your best streak;
• game duration;
• Points earned.

This allows you to compare your results over time.

In one game, you might try to reach a higher rank. In another, your goal might be to build a longer streak, earn more Points, or simply survive for longer.

Can You Play Survival Mode Without an Account?

Yes.

You can also try Survival Mode as a guest.

Signing in to your DMS account, however, connects the game to the DMS progress, statistics, and Points systems.

If you want to track your results and compare previous attempts, playing with a DMS account gives you more options.

Why Does a Time Limit Change Vocabulary Practice?

There is a difference between remembering the meaning of a word after thinking about it for a while and recognising that word almost immediately.

In Survival Mode, there is not much time for long deliberation.

You see a word, recognise its meaning, and choose the correct translation.

The process repeats:

This makes German vocabulary practice more dynamic and very different from calmly studying a traditional vocabulary list.

After the game, you can return to the words you answered incorrectly and review them again.

Survival Mode therefore combines two approaches:

The main challenge in Survival Mode, however, is finding the correct answers under time pressure while protecting your lives, building streaks, earning Points, and climbing the ranks.
